Wakes and Memorials at Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village

Set within the tranquil surroundings of the Surrey Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village is a beautifully landscaped Arts & Crafts estate conveniently located in the village of Compton, just ten minutes from Guildford and forty minutes from London. With a calm and peaceful atmosphere, the Artists’ Village is the perfect location in which to celebrate and remember the life of a loved one.

Watts Gallery – Artists’ Village is the legacy of England’s greatest Victorian artist, George Frederic Watts (1817-1904), and his wife Mary Watts (1849 – 1938), the renowned ceramicist and designer whose work was sold at Liberty & Co.

The Artists’ Village includes Limnerslease, the Arts & Crafts house the Wattses built in 1891; Watts Gallery, the first purpose-built gallery dedicated to the work of a single artist; the Grade I listed Watts Chapel; Watts Studios and the Former Compton Pottery which houses the visitor centre, contemporary gallery, shop and our award-winning Tea Shop.

Surrounded by beautifully landscaped grounds and woodlands, we offer the ideal tranquil location for a memorial or wake. Experience a quiet moment at Watts Chapel, taking in the stunning natural beauty of the Surrey Hills, before enjoying a catered lunch or afternoon tea with family and friends in Limnerslease or the Old Kiln.

Our attentive staff are experienced in sympathetically attending to your requirements at this difficult time. The Venue Hire Team will look after any requirements you may have with discretion and careful attention to detail. We offer a selection of menus and refreshments from which to choose and have several spaces available for your event.

For smaller wakes, guests can gather in the Old Kiln, an intimate space full of character with original exposed red brick walls and high ceilings. The Old Kiln has a capacity of up to 40 guests.

Larger events can be held in Limnerslease, where guests can take in the unique architectural features of this historic house. Guests can enjoy refreshments in the calming spaces of the house or on the spacious lawn. Limnerslease has a capacity of up to 60 guests.

The Artists’ Village has parking for up to 75 vehicles, with dedicated parking spaces available for disabled visitors. The Old Kiln is fully accessible, though we regret that Limnerslease is not fully wheelchair accessible.

By booking an event with us, you will work closely with our experienced Venue Hire Team to customise a bespoke memorial, personalised to your needs. Your booking will support the conservation and care of the Artists’ Village estate and collection and on-going education and exhibition programmes.
